Ammunition reloading allows shooters to tailor loads to specific guns, improving both accuracy and performance in hunting or target shooting. However, when it comes to reloading supplies, such as gunpowder, primers, and reloading equipment, utmost care must be exercised in safety at all times. Even minor errors may lead to the destruction of the firearms, injuries, or accidents.

Wear Eye and Ear Protection at All Times

Reloading or testing ammunition should always be done with safety glasses and hearing protection. Accidental ignition of the primer may result in dangerous fragments or loud explosions, even during the reloading process. Safety glasses are used to prevent flying debris, such as primer cups, powder flakes, or case neck shavings, from harming your eyes. Ear protection is helpful during test-firing of rounds, particularly in a closed or echo-filled range.

Wear over-the-ear muffs or in-ear plugs, whichever you find comfortable and practical. When going through sensitive reloading steps, select ANSI-rated safety glasses with proven impact resistance. Do not wear everyday eyewear without side protection. Wearing both types of protection should become a habit every time you work with reloading supplies. When watching others reload, also wear protective gear. Approach all loading sessions with the utmost care to protect yourself.

Maintain a Clean and Neat Workplace

Avoid clutter that may lead to the mixing of powders or primers, which can cause accidents. Bullets, casings, and containers of powder should always be stored in separate areas. Labeled bins, trays, and storage shelves should be used to avoid mix-ups or cross-contamination. A clean workbench reduces confusion when changing calibers or handling multiple loads simultaneously.

Clean work surfaces regularly to remove debris that can affect the functionality of your reloading equipment. Store all the reloading supplies, including powder measures, scales, and presses, when they are not in use. Create binders or folders to organize your manuals and notes, making it easy to reference them quickly during sessions. Clean up powder spills immediately with a brush, not a vacuum cleaner or any other device that generates static.

Separate and Store Components Safely

Primers, powders, and loaded rounds should be stored in sealed containers labeled clearly and stored in a place that is not exposed to heat or open flames. Store your materials in dry storage facilities that prevent moisture from accumulating and compromising the quality of your materials. Use metal or plastic storage boxes with locking lids to minimize the risk of spills or ignition. Identify each container with its specific type, brand, and lot number for future use or to track recalls.

Always use the original packaging where available, as it is designed to be safe and regulatory compliant. Children, pets, or unauthorized people should never have access to your reloading storage areas. Store combustible materials in home workshops following local fire codes.

Get Reloading Supplies

Reloading is a task that requires safety, discipline, and attention to detail. Safety should be the foundation of the entire process, whether you are a novice or an experienced reloader. Regularly assess your practices and modify them in response to feedback, outcomes, or new information. Safety habits will prolong the life of your equipment. Start by purchasing high-quality reloading supplies.
